At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, resided a boy named Shepherd. His life was essentially untarnished, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to look after his herd of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the gales across the solo tree on the mountaintop were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. In one such instance because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plan.
Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One day he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but found no beast.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a here mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
